Offline mode (desktop and mobile app)

Both in the desktop app as well as mobile, a (read only if needed) Offline mode would be great!

Done a couple of meetings on the construction site and even in a ‘good’ environment the internet conditions on site are not great. Meaning a lot of lag for every action I want to make on the model. Even selections, using the project browser, …

Bit of the same situation if we want to use it on a tablet. Those have WiFi access in the site office. But once we start walking around, there is no more internet. Using a 5G tablet or possibly mobile hotspot from the phone is not always an option because of indoor conditions, certainly in basements where the cellular network is very weak.

One thing that needs to remain active to ‘change’ is the issue management => so there needs to be a method to cache changes and sync them later. Other things could be acceptable to be read only.

Hello Johan,

Good suggestion; Offline mode was something we always took into account when building our git-like collaboration framework. It’s not available yet, but it’s on our development roadmap.

Hi Tiemen,

I understand it is/was not the biggest priority when looking at design phase and even work preparation on the contractor side. For those (me included), we have a solid internet connection 99% of the time

It is only when starting to use Qonic from the jobsite that it becomes another situation:

  • Site meetings: there is an internet connection, but usually from 4G/5G that isn’t always stable (inside a metal container, sometimes inside a building without fixed internet connection) => Loading might take longer, that is acceptable. But during regular use it’d be nice that everything is cached locally.

  • Mobile use: that’s another situation because we’d like to use tablets with only a WiFi connection. So we need to load the models from a hotspot or from the site office. Then the internet gets disconnected while walking around the building site.
I tried this one already and it works a little bit. We do get a message to connect again, but can close that. As long as we don’t want to open a side panels that isn’t previously cached/loaded it kind of works.
For now I’ll propose to use a hotspot from the site supervisors phone or orded a tablet with 5G connectivity.

  • Once the offline mode becomes available, it still becomes a question what functionality? Viewing, sections, measuring, … should always be possible.
Changing geometry - for us - is not a priority to do offline. So ‘Read only’ mode would be acceptable.
Adding issues though, is an important part that should work offline.

  • And then the AI assistant: I suppose that one works server-side so it will only work in online mode? I can see uses of the assistant to help create issues based on speech during site meetings. But that will probably require a rather solid internet link.
