When a material has multiple material layers (and is not yet split to BuildingElementParts), the individual layers don’t show up in the list of materials in the browse or report panel:
I think it would be good to have that as an option toggle maybe?
Actually splitting the elements into layers will likely be a much better solution but to me that means also putting quite some time/effort into making fixing all kinds of small errors, …

We think that IFC material layer sets are very limiting, because they don’t contain information about the actual geometry of the parts, but only the thickness/offset of the layers. It means that for non-regular wall geometry, material layer sets are not reliable for extracting quantities.
That’s why we do support IFC material layer sets in import (for compatibility), but the Qonic tools for quantities, materials, etc. ignore those material layer sets. So we recommend users to split them into Building Element Parts, as you suggest.
I agree that it is the better solution to work with BuildingElementParts!
But in a situation where we don’t have the time to put all effort into splitting to parts, we still want an easy way to select elements by material.
In the example I was working on, I wanted to create a list of all the materials that are used in that project. Because a lot of information is stored in the material name (material keynote, material name/type, thickness, …).
Maybe the AI assistant will be able to help with that in the future, I don’t know. But I still think it is a valid way to work for projects/models that are ‘read only’ in Qonic. Meaning that we have no intention of changing them and maybe even will keep receiving regular updates from the architect/designer.
