MEP Enhancements

Experimenting with MEP models for the first time in Qonic.

We made a very simple model with some ducting, couple of air terminals, nothing fancy. I tried uploading in Qonic in two different ways:

  • Revit IFC export (IFC2x3)
  • Revit model directly into the Qonic dashboard

The results look a bit different, which is normal of course. Now in both cases the ducts show as completely solid. I am used to other viewers showing everything only by their faces even when they are solid. But in this case I’d rather see ‘shells’ instead of solid.

Then there is the question of changes made to the model. For architectural models there already is some logic in Qonic. eg. When moving/copying/transforming a door/window the surrounding elements get adapted automatically.
But when doing something similar with an air terminal, the system breaks. Probably this is already somewhere on the roadmap. Would be very nice to have the same functionality so that we can do small changes from Qonic and not rely on Revit for those.

Using the Qonic geometry kernel to it’s full advantage would be very useful for drainage pipes I’d say. It would allow for a full representation of the wall thickness of the pipes. In drainage that is important because very often (at least in BE) the ‘invert level’ (NL: vloeipeil) is used to define the level of the piping. Currently that means calculating based on the material and pressure class to get a wall thickness, then use that + radius to find the center of pipe. And then it needs to be installed and those installers need the outside levels (bottom to prep, top to verify pipe is in tolerance).

For other types of pipes I think it is less important whether they are drawn as a solid shell with thickness, or a simple shell only representing the outside dimensions.

Pipe/duct insulation on the other hand would benefit from being solid.
